Cycling around Forres
The area is becoming increasingly popular for
cycling as there are many opportunities for both on and off road cycling
throughout the year, early spring right through to late autumn being
the best time, the summer months with its long days allows you to
cycle well into the evening hours.
Many of the quite back roads also offer spectacular scenery for cycling
and it is common to hardly see many cars. There are also miles of
pathways through most of the forests around the Forres area, although
these are not usually marked as cycle trails they are ideal for most
abilities.
The Culbin Forest which is right on the coast is probably the biggest
forest close to Forres, with miles of coastal pinewoods, forestry
tracks and fire breakers its big enough to get lost if you're not
paying attention, there
are waymarked
trails for walking and
cycling. For directions plus information about wildlife you may encounter
please visit the Culbin
forestry commission webpage.
You can now cycle from Forres to Findhorn on the new cycle path, the
path is at the side of the main road so while it is not the most scenic
it does make it much safer, if you fancy a nice long ride along the
beach try cycling from Findhorn to Burghead which is about 10 miles
down the coast, tide permitting.
Another nice cycle is from Roseisle forest to Burghead, its quite
a bit shorter and there are proper waymarked
walks and informal walks
running through the forest, picnic
/ barbecue area, children's play equipment, toilets
and cycling trails. For directions
and more information please visit the Roseisle
forestry commission webpage, please note: there is a small charge
for car parking
- about £1
The Dava Way is a marked
walking trail going from Forres to Grantown-on-Spey following mostly
what was the old Highland Railway Line, the trail is about 40 Km long
and is suitable for reasonably experienced mountain biking.

Dava Way
website.
